Blogging while the girls are out and the boys are on the Wii. I even worked on a campaign to get Dads to spend more time with their kids. Ah well, we also have water purifiers, education and hand-sanitisation (in developing markets) clients too. We count fast food, cookies, crisps, carbonated soft drinks all among our clients. Having said that, I'm reminded that I work for a company supported the charge to undo this good Eastern habit. There's next to no obesity among the elderly in China and less than 5% nationally (compared to over 60% in western countries like UK and USA). A 70+ year old pensioner going strong on the slalom. It's always really impressive to see the older patrons working their way round the apparatus. The kids had a great time on the bench press, rowing machine and (the favourite) the leg swinging machine. Theirs was an era of big families (6-8 was usual before the one child policy). This is always the most celebrated piece of information. I've got just enough Chinese to tell them I work in Shanghai, we live a few streets away, we're English and yes, all 3 kids are ours. Today, as the kids spread out to test the equipment, a couple of compound patriarchs ambled over to say hello. A China with better prospects for their grandkids and great-grandkids. An internationally successful and globally appealing China.

Our presence, in part, is a reminder of a more open China. We are always greeted warmly and with genuine curiosity. Our family, my company, the compound we live on, our lifestyle all represent the values and ways of life that were rejected by their leaders when their families were in the same phase of life as mine. Given some of them were born in the 1930s they would have lived through Mao's ascension post WW2 and were about my age during the cultural revolution of the 1960s when references to western culture, religion and the bourgeoisie were erased. I love seeing these wizened and weathered faces.

It was already busy with the older generation sat socialising in their multiple layers and headscarves (it is still April, important to stay in layers until May). We followed the kids as they scooted round to the place about 'two blocks' away from us. Today, wanting to go somewhere outside but nearby (the aquarium and arcade trips two days running have left us a little excursion weary), I suggested the exercise place. The other day I cut through a more local residential area on my way home from work and noticed a big exercise area. Ours has a little one (a pair of swings, climbing frame and slide). Some of the more international residential compounds have them. Their children were allowed to play, but only on a weekend for a couple of hours once they'd done their homework, piano practice, language practice etc.Īs a result there's not much call for playgrounds. Not long ago I was involved in a research project where we had group and 1-2-1 discussions with Chinese mums.

At least not the ones that you find in a British park (football pitch, swings & slides, zip slide if your local council has some budget to use up at the end of the year).
